When the Wizard of Oz was released in 1939, the world had been consumed by an economic depression. Much of the landscape seemed as bleak, bland, brown, and hopeless as a stereotypical Kansas plain. The film depicts this time in the pre-Oz scenes with drab sepia dominating the colorscape. Then, when Dorothy opens her eyes following the whirlwind, an amazing technicolor world is dramatically unveiled. This scene marked the debut of color film on the big screen and symbolically represented a new era of hope. What a wonderful sentiment in our troubled times, to unveil a new era of hope. Maybe in some way, the creative projects inspired by these fabrics can do their part to promote more hope. Premium 44” cotton.
